NYC Dogs and the Hot Weather!

The heat can pose problems wherever you live but especially in New York City. On extra hot and humid days you need to go easy with the dogs, overly hydrate them and look at the color of their tongue. If their tongue starts to turn blue you have problems. One time I had to run a bulldog into a bodega and shove him into the ice cream freezer because he was overheating. I then shoved bags of ice under his armpits and around his neck to cool him down. Luckily everything worked out okay and I'll always remember that sight of a beautiful white bulldog panting in a freezer with containers of Ben and Jerrys behind his head (^_^) But it could have turned out badly and I would go extra slow and be ridiculously safe on hot and humid days especially with dogs who have respiratory issues like Boxers, Boston Terriers, Pugs and Bulldogs.

Sometimes my walkers don't know what times are too hot for the dogs to take a long walk. I tell them to place their palms on the sidewalk and if they can't hold it there for more than 3-5 seconds then the dogs need quick bathroom breaks. New York City also has lots of manholes (pictured) and these are like a frying pan on a hot day and dogs can not leave their paws on them for even a few moments without jumping. I've been trying some new sandwiches from S'Nice (on 8th Ave. between Jane and Horatio) and loving them. My Father tried the mock meatball parm hero and said he never would have guessed there was no meat in it. I've been eating the Philly cheese sandwich (with soy cheese), the Caeasar wrap, the Meatball Parm (for vegans ask for no parm) and they have different pasta combinations daily. Of course you can never go wrong with a Hazelnut coffee and vegan cupcake either (^_^)

Here are some quick tips and products where you can find nutrients you need in a vegan diet. While most of them can be found in vegetables and vegetable based proteins these are some quick ways to get your daily doses. I'm not vouching for this approach and you should obviously research it yourself, maybe with your doctor.

* B-12: B-12 is said to be very beneficial for anyone but is especially necessary for those who don't eat animal products. I take a daily Solgar's Megasorb Vitamin B12, 5000 mcg Nugget - (view solgar's vegetarian products)

* Daily vitamin: I take Solgar Formula V vm-75 twice a day.

* For iron I eat a large bowl of Cheerios every morning but I am looking for an organic replacement.

* For protein I sprinkle NutriBiotic Vegan Rice Protein over my Cheerios. This protein powder is amazing - you get 12 grams of protein from one serving, it has only 1 gram of sugar per serving and only 1.8 grams of carb's per serving.

Basically I knock out a big part of my iron and protein daily requirement with my first meal of the day and my morning vitamins. Outside of that I eat a balanced, normal diet for the rest of the day (^_^)

Chickens actually get weak from laying eggs and will eat their own eggs to re-energize themselves. Chickens are much smarter than people think and have very strong familial ties. When a speaker was giving a speech at Harvard University he described the traits of an animal without telling them what animal it was. Almost all the students guessed he was describing a monkey...but he was describing a chicken (^_^)

They used to say the road to the White House went through Tim Russert and they were right. When a politician went on Russert's show, Meet the Press, they needed to be in top form because Russert was going to do his homework and wasn't going to be lied to. But Russert was so much more than a political giant. He was a lover of life and everything that comes with it. He loved his family, his hometown of Buffalo, sports and as much as he loved politics it was talking about someones kids that really put a smile on his face. In recent years I feel I regrettably took him for granted in the same way you might with a great actor who puts in amazing performance after amazing performance. But he will be sorely missed because there is no one who can replace him. Winston Churchill's wife spoke of how the great men are really children at heart. Russert certainly was and brought a civility to journalism in a time where the one who speaks loudest is most rewarded.
